I really don't have to guard my heart. Google will tell you by experience that wife and mil dont get along in most cases. If you want to find yourself being dismissive of something you don't like your wife, you need to tell them that isn't. In the end do whatever you do, don't, without reason, yell at your wife. Now that you're retired, you get to spend everyday with your wife.
